Dhruv Chand Jurel was born on 21 January 2001 in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. As of 2024, Dhruv is 23 years old. Dhruv Jurel grew up in a family with a strong military background. His father, Nem Singh Jurel, was a Kargil war veteran, who retired as a Havaldar in 2008. His mother, Rajani Jurel, is a homemaker. He was raised alongside his elder sister Neeru Jurel. He did his schooling at Army Public School and later completed his graduation.

Dhruv’s father wanted him to become an army officer. However, he had a passion for athletics, particularly cricket. When he was at the school, he saw some kids playing cricket at the camp and got interested. He joined the camp without informing his parents. During a summer program at his Agra school, Jurel was first introduced to cricket and fell in love with the game.

He started his career as an off-spinner bowler. But, Parvendra Yadav, his coach, advised him to focus on his batting and wicket keeping. Dhruv sharpened his skills and represented Uttar Pradesh at various levels. He played for them, including U-14, U-16, and U-19 teams.

Domestic Career

Dhruv Jurel’s professional cricketing career began in January 2021. He made his debut for Uttar Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, a Twenty20 tournament. After his incredible performance, the selectors were impressed by his abilities. Jurel was appointed vice-captain of the Indian team for the U-19 Cricket World Cup.

Since then, he has made significant strides in his cricketing career. He displayed his temperament as a player both at the domestic and international levels.

A major turning point in Dhruv Jurel’s career came in February 2022. He signed with the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League auction. After that, he also made his first-class appearance for Uttar Pradesh in the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy.

His reputation as a potential cricketer was further solidified when he made his debut for India A. He played his first game against United Arab Emirates A in the 2023 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup. On 5th April 2023, Jurel made his IPL debut in Guwahati against the Punjab Kings. He scored a blistering knock of 32* (15).

  • In January 2024, Dhruv Chand Jurel earned his maiden call in the Indian Test squad. He was called for the first two tests against England.
  • Dhruv Jurel debuted for India in a test match against England in Rajkot on 15 February 2024. He replaced Srikar Bharat and made his way to the team.
  • In his first inning, he showed his batting talent on the international stage, scoring 46 off 104 balls. He did not get a chance to bat in the second inning. However, his contribution to the team’s performance is outstanding.
  • Dhruv played brilliantly in the first innings of the fourth test match against England at Ranchi. He scored a crucial 90 runs off 149 balls. By finishing the innings as India’s top run scorer, he proved that he can perform well under immense pressure.
  • In the second innings, he formed a key partnership with Shubman Gill. Dhruv played a key role in guiding India to victory, scoring 39* runs off 77 balls. He won the Player of the Match award for his outstanding performance in just his second test.
