Plot Summary

The story revolves around a retired assassin named Zuko (Bonko Khoza). Zuko was once a member of Alkebulan, a secret organization that fought against social injustices and protected innocent victims. When he killed a corrupt father in front of his innocent child, Zuko resigned from Alkebulan and decided to retire because his conscience could not take any of the guilt of murder. Therefore, he decides to start a new life with Malime (Masasa Mbangeni) and her son, Pakamile (Boleng Mogotsi), in another city. However, things go sour when Zuko’s previous life knocks at their door as his old friend Johnny Klein (Peter Butler) comes to him for help to overthrow the current corrupt presidential candidate, Daza Mtima (Sisanda Henna).

Let us delve into this suspenseful spy thriller with an explanation of the ending!

The film kick starts with an action sequence where Zuko is seen killing a man (a corrupt politician) with a spear on his driveway in front of his small son. The dream wakes him up with a jolt, and we are back to present time, where he lays beside his girlfriend Malime. This flashback occurred two years ago, a poignant event in Zuko’s life as he left the Alkebulan, an activist group he was a part of, after that.

The Presidential Intelligence Agency (PIA) tries to catch Johnny Klein

Following that, PIA director Mo (Connie Ferguson) led an operation to take out the activist Johnny Klein, who was part of the Alkebulan group and viewed as a threat to the presidential candidate, Daza Mtima’s ambitions to be the ruling government again. Mtima is shown as an immoral authoritarian individual who has control even over PIA, thereby leaving only Alkebulans as the opponents to his regime. For this reason, and probably thinking that Johnny Klein had some evidence against him, Mtima deployed a special squad to get rid of Klein. The squad was led by a burly tactical agent named Tiger. Tiger went to find a guy, and thinking it was Klein, he started a fight to catch him. The unknown person, probably an ally of Klein, fought well with Tiger. However, things went bad when he was shot by another trooper while trying to escape. When Mtima came to know that they killed the wrong guy, he pressured Mo into finding the right guy fast.

While having a calm morning with his girlfriend’s son, Pakamile, Zuko hears a knock on the door. He is surprised and angry to find Johnny Klein, who tells him that they can overthrow Mtima now. Unwilling to listen to him, Zuko talks in whispers. Klein gives him a newspaper showing the news of Mtima doing well in polls and calls Zuko by his old name, Umzingeli, before going away. When asked by his girlfriend, who was at the door, Zuko lies to her, stating that it was a salesman.

Johnny sends a message to a senior reporter at Cape Sentinel named Mike Bressler, telling him of the evidence he has against Mtima.

Determined to catch Johnny, Mo sends her team to follow him. They identify Johnny at a hotel and closely follow him. Johnny goes to Zuko’s workplace and quickly gives him the evidence, even after Zuko refuses profusely. The PIA took note of him as Klein’s errand boy. Klein confesses that he has cancer and advises Zuko to go to Maseru, where the Alkebulan formed.

After Klein gets into his car, the PIA goes on an intense car chase with him. Klein ends up shooting himself and falling from an undone flyover.

What does Zuko decide to do?

Coming into a conflicted situation, Zuko decided to go back to his old life and finish what Klein started. He went to Malime’s workplace and called her from afar. In a heartfelt conversation, Zuko bid her farewell. Then, he went to the airport and was chased by the PIA. He beats up two of the PIA’s men and succeeds in escaping.

What happens to Malime and Pakamile?

Maybe the writers fell short in this part where Malime and Pakamile are taken by the PIA in Zuko’s absence. You would think that a trained assassin like Zuko would know that the PIA would come for his loved ones, but that doesn’t happen, and Malime is taken for questioning. When one of Mo’s employees, Naledi (code name “Gemini”), is revealed to be a member of Alkebulan infiltrating the PIA, things get more intense. Naledi talks to Zuko and reveals that she’s also in it. She tells him that she will take care of Malime and warns him that he’ll be ruthlessly hunted by the PIA.

Naledi tried to free Malime when her cover was blown. However, on the way, Malime falls down from the building and dies. Naledi escapes with her, without having any other option.

Does the PIA catch Zuko?

Mo was determined to catch Zuko when Mtima blackmails her. Zuko steals a bike from his workplace and goes to Maseru when the PIA are alerted. On the road, Tiger and his team wait to catch Zuko. After a heated fight sequence, he manages to hide and escape from them.

Pakamile is then held by the PIA to use as bait for Zuko. Zuko arrives at Maseru and is united with his roots and reason for why he took an oath to become a part of the Alkebulan.

“Heart of the Hunter” Ending Explained

Zuko’s rage and bloodlust drove him to go ahead with his mission of revenge, using the spear when he learns of Malime’s death. However, he also connected with Bressler whom Mtima had once destroyed, by presenting papers showing Mtima’s unlawful past.

With his favorite spear, Zuko gets to the secluded hideout where Mo kept Pako under captivity and seeks vengeance from Mtima. The movie peaks at this point as Tiger reaches the scene and fights against Zuko in the rain. The fight scene is vicious as both the men showcase their strength and speed. When Zuko is just about to kill Tiger using his spear, he hears Pako scream his name. He turns to see that Mo had taken him hostage demanding Zuko’s surrender.

However, the plot changes when Mo unexpectedly shoots Mtima in the chest as he arrogantly orders her to kill Zuko, possibly due to the evidence he has against her father. Mo moves the gun towards Zuko and his son but before she could pull the trigger, Naledi comes from behind and shoots her instead.

The ending is pretty buttersweet. Mtima’s corruption is revealed by the evidence reported in Cape Sentinel. The father and son are happy, however, there’s a big void left after Malime’s death.
